On Monday, Lil Nas X 's Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus surpassed the record for most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts with 17 weeks (and counting). The 20-year-old rising star broke both Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's One Sweet Day and Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber's Despacito's 16-week tie.
Lil Nas let out a "YEEE TF HAWWW ?⚡️" tweet after Billboard made the announcement. He further took to Instagram, recalling the road to creating the No. 1 stint as a "struggling artist", last year.
"Last year in October, as a struggling artist starting to lose faith in what I could be, I went looking for beats on YouTube. I remember clicking on so many generic sounding beats trying to find the right one for me. When suddenly I came across a country-trap sounding masterpiece," said Lil Nas in a lengthy caption, adding, "I started to work on it EVERY SINGLE DAY. It needed to be funny, it needed to be catchy, it needed to be hip hop, it needed to be country, & it needed to be short!!!".
The rapper narrated his surprise over the massive success of Old Town Road,  thanking fans for making it happen, "thank you to every single person who has been a part of this journey. As I said before, it's just the beginning! ???⚡️".
Lil Nas X came out as gay in late June and he recently referred to that in his tweet:
Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber are among celebrities who congratulated the artist on the record-breaking achievement. "Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history!" Mariah tweeted along with a photoshopped image, passing the torch to Lil Nas X.
