An artist with a unique blend of Afro-beats, soul and EDM, WURLD is an artist worth watching. He has a recently released hit singles; Contagious,  Trubl with Sarz, and upcoming EP, Trubl set to come out later this year. We interviewed him to get an idea of what inspires his music and future plans.
KenyaBuzz: Why WURLD?
WURLD: Many years ago when I started, I was experimenting with different things and I would play those songs to my friends or music producers and they always told me that my music had a world feel.
KenyaBuzz: A world feel? What does that mean?
WURLD: It means that the song can catch on anywhere at even given time. It had a colourless feel to it. It could not fit in any genre. Initially I spelt it WORLD but then I realized Google would be my enemy, and it will be hard for people to find me. So I spelt it with a 'U'.
KenyaBuzz: Let us talk about the beginning, you studied IT; what made you make that transition to music?
WURLD: I always knew I wanted to do music. In the early stages, when I was in college and trying to find a discipline, I knew that music would not be the ideal because I had African parents. They wouldn't let me do that. I chose computer science because I loved math and it seemed to be the perfect balance for me to manoeuvre. I did computer science for my Bachelor's degree and IT for my Masters.
While I was in college my study time was split between going to talent shows or song writing sessions in Atlanta. I would stay up all night in studios. I only made the full transition when I felt it was right but I was doing many side hustles after I graduated just to keep the dream alive.
KenyaBuzz: Has everything that you learnt in college been useful?
WURLD: Yes, IT has really helped with my music because I can record, produce and engineer myself.
KenyaBuzz: I like the song Show you off. I am curious to know what kind of mindset you were in when creating it and generally your creative process.
WURLD: I like to be alone in the studio. I never like to drink or smoke. I like to draw inspiration from the energies around me. That means you have to dig deep into yourself without being on any sort of high. I don't write, I freestyle then I record it. Although some songs take, a lot more time than others do.
Show you off took four days. I only had the hook initially. I took time on the verses because I wanted to bring out the conversation in the song, so there are a lot of hidden gems in the verses that many people can catch on to. The goal was to fuse afro beats with a mainstream sound to create this Afro-soul jam.
KenyaBuzz: Is there a particular theme to your music?
WURLD: There is a different message in each song. Like Show you off is about how men relate to women. You meet your girl and she is all dressed up and looking nice, but before you get to the fun stuff, you take her out to eat. In doing that, you are actually showing her off because everyone gets see how good she looks.
KenyaBuzz: How do you balance making a mark in both Nigerian and American culture? Or is there a culture you want to be identified with between the two?
WURLD: Been born in Nigeria and getting to be part of the culture is the dopest thing ever. I grew up in America and have gotten a chance to meet different people and experience different cultures; it has helped in me awareness of the world as well as widening the conversation in my songs. Fusing African rhythm into my music is my way of getting back to my childhood and being in the back seat of my parents' car and listening to the music they liked.
KenyaBuzz: You have brushed shoulders and done collaborations with many artists like Walshy Fire, Trinidad James and Timbaland. What was your most memorable collaboration?
WURLD: Show you off with Walshy Fire and Shizzi because it was the first of its kind. It stands on its own island. I have not heard many other songs like it. I created it with love and I think people can see it and relate to that.
KenyaBuzz: Is there anyone you would love to work with?
WURLD: Kanye West, Coldplay and I think Rihanna would be dope.
KenyaBuzz: Whom did you listen to as a kid that inspired your music?
WURLD: Michael Jackson, Mariah, Boyz II Men, Donell Jones; a lot of old school RnB and soul.
KenyaBuzz: Random Question; If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
WULRD: To be able to make people happy.
