World Refugee Day 2020: Tech4Refugees
World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It is commemorated on the 20th of June each year and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
This year’s theme is : Every Action Counts. The UN Refugee Agency is calling on all of us to do what we can to raise awareness on the agency and human stories of refugees all over the world and that’s what Tech4refugees is doing.
Tech4refugees aims to change the lives of both urban refugees and refugees in camps by inspiring and introducing STEM and coding to them, and hopefully providing a space where they can find these services.
On June 10th, they started a series dubbed #morethanrefugees on their social media platforms to highlight the incredible work young creatives at Kakuma refugee Camp in Northeastern Kenya are doing with the skills they’ve learnt over the past four years through various initiatives by Tech4refugees.
They help foster a new generation of youth with access to the global information and communication technology (ICT) through the development of websites, mobile applications and graphic design.
Because these services can be delivered online, workers can earn income beyond the confines of the camp.
The young techies at Kakuma have worked on various projects from satellite and solar devices that remotely beam qualified tutors into overcrowded classes to apps that help refugees track their monthly welfare stipends.
