1st July is International Reggae Day. It's a day to celebrate the Reggae music genre and reflect on the social, cultural impact it's made worldwide over the years. According to an early definition in The Dictionary of Jamaican English, reggae is based on ska, an earlier form of Jamaican popular music that emerged in the late 1950s in Jamaica.
Today, Reggae has become (incorrectly) synonymous with Rastafarianism and many social justice movements across the globe. In Kenya, it started booming in the late 1970s and early 1980s with Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Don Carlos, Burning Spear, Wailing Souls and Peter Tosh being the most loved artists.
Reggae is arguably the most popular genre of music enjoyed by urban youth in the country. This has been made possible through the dissemination of curated DJ mixes that are wildly popular on music sharing site Soundcloud
