Teen Mums Offered a Second Chance at Serene Haven Rescue Centre

It's not easy being a teenage girl navigating a complex world. It's even harder when you're a teen mum. With safe abortion options out of reach for many teens who live in poverty, being forced to become a mother at such an early age has far-reaching consequences and especially on their education. Many of them are forced to drop out of school and this has a negative impact on their future.

During the Covid-19 crisis, as schools shut down, Kenyan media reported widely about concerns that lockdown conditions contributed to teenage pregnancy. President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that pregnant schoolgirls should be registered to ensure that they receive ante-natal care but has yet to speak about helping them stay in school.

Serene Haven Rescue Centre in Nyeri was founded to address the teenage pregnancy crisis in Kenya exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.

The rescue centre is designed to help expectant teen mums and teen mothers prepare for motherhood. They reside in a separate home on the school campus. The home, staffed by experienced matrons, with support from other staff, is dedicated to their special needs and services.

Expectant teen mothers and teen mothers benefit from receiving counseling from their in-house therapists and education from the state certified school. The expectant teen mother's health is overseen by a staff nurse in partnership with community based medical and psychiatric professionals.

Upon delivery, the mothers receive on-going medical care and their babies receive regular pediatric care by a pediatrician.
