Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari: Mumbai Matchmaking in the 90s

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari (translation Mars is Heavy on Sun) is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language satirical comedy-drama film. Suraj is a young Sikh man looking for a wife in the Bombay (now Mumbai) of 1995.

His schtick is Mr. “Progressive Nice Guy”.  He is supposedly nice to women because ‘he has a sister’. Eye roll. But what proof does he have of it? The truth is Suraj is on the lookout for an ultra conservative marriage. So his ideal partner is a woman who will be “submissive” and cook and toil all day and birth him many, many sons.

Remember, this is bustling Mumbai in the 90s. Women are trying to get degrees and fulfilling careers. It’s a new age in India. Women in Bombay are not buying the “I respect women” trope so they hire a renowned wedding detective to perform background checks on prospective grooms. In the time before social media and mobile phones, everything has to be done in person.

The detective has some interesting findings on Suraj. The unravelling begins. It’s two hours of arranged marriages commentary told in a satirical method.
