Mama's Mirror is a captivating one-woman stand-up play that delves into the unique bond between African mothers and daughters. Dr. Zippy Okoth takes us on a journey through her relationship with her mother, sharing anecdotes from her childhood, youth, and motherhood.
We learn about her mother's upbringing in Nairobi, her marriage, and their life in the small town of Homa Bay. As Zippy reflects on her own life in the village and later in Nairobi, she recalls her mother's stories of the city and the men, leading to a re-awakening of her own ambitions and aspirations.
Dr. Zippy Okoth brings a bold and spirited performance to the stage, embodying her mother's bubbly and activist personality. Through her captivating storytelling, we see the similarities between mother and daughter, realizing that some things never change. Her gripping narrative covers a range of topics, including mind-blowing growing-up experiences, love, and death.
This show is a tribute to all African mothers, from those who are still with us to those who have passed on, and to those whose relationships with their mothers are complicated. Mama's Mirror is a touching and relatable story that is sure to resonate with audiences everywhere.
I draw parallels with Dr. Zippy Okoth's work and that of Kenyan Somali poet Warsan Shire who also explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. Come experience this deeply personal story this Friday 31st March at Kenya National Theater. Tickets available on KenyaBuzz.
