KB: How long have you been cosplaying and who did you dress as?
It's hard to remember clearly now but I think my first cosplay was in 2013. I cosplayed an anime character, Captain Unohana from the popular anime Bleach. This was for a cultural event at the Japanese embassy.
KB: Nice! Why specifically Captain Unohana? What about this specific character inspired you?
I was watching the anime Bleach at the time and I was a huge fan. The opportunity to cosplay came up and I decided to give it a go. A Bleach Captain's uniform is one of the simplest and most affordable costumes to make and I happened to have knee-length braids, almost as long as Unohana's hair. I chose the character mainly because I was sure all the factors needed to make the cosplay happen could come together, which is a major deciding factor when choosing cosplays...but also, Unohana is probably the strongest female character on that show, which is my favorite type of character to cosplay.
KB: What was it like cosplaying for the first time? Take us through the experience, from getting the costume, reactions from people and your key takeaways while doing it.
It was great. I mean the cosplay wasn't show stopping but it was accurate and everybody loves an accurate cosplay. It's always great seeing the results after putting in the work and it also feels pretty rewarding when people recognize the character and compliment the cosplay. I didn't become huge on cosplay then and there but it sparked something in me.
KB:  Do you have a current cosplay favorite?
Lady Deadpool and Wonder Woman which I did a few months ago.
At the start of the year I made a list of all the cosplays I wanted to do this year and Lady Deadpool happened to be at the top of that list. I love Deadpool and it just so happens that there's a female version of this character. As for Wonder Woman, this project was inspired by a friend of mine who works for a fashion magazine. She wanted to interview me and feature my work and so I created something new. She recommended Wonder Woman, who also happened to be on my list, though set for much later.
KB: How would you describe your experience at NAICCON?
I love attending NAICCON. It's always a good time and there's always so much to see. The event seems to get bigger and better each time.
KB: For a potential newbie to the cosplay world, what would they expect to see visually or beyond at NAICCON?
At NAICCON, various businesses and organizations come together to exhibit their products and/or services. These are usually mostly businesses and organizations related to pop culture and tech, which are all the rage right now. There's always a lot to see: gaming, books and comics, merchandise etc. and let me not forget to mention the gaming tournament and cosplay competition, which are huge attractions when it comes to NAICCON.
KB: Any particular memorable moments at doing cosplay you'd like to share?
A collection of them, all relating to meeting, getting to know and even collaborating with other cosplayers in Nairobi. I love socializing with other creatives.
KB: What is the one thing that specifically stands out to you when it comes to NAICCON events?
My favorite thing about NAICCON, other than getting to cosplay is the high attendance. I love meeting and getting to know so many new people, many with similar interests as me.
