It is the third highest grossing film of 2019, China's 2nd highest grossing film of all time, and the 2nd highest grossing non-English film of all time after Wolf Warrior 2, another Chinese film. Yet little was known about it outside China before Netflix acquired global streaming rights.
The Wandering Earth is a sci-fi film directed by Frant Gwo about a group of astronauts trying to guide the earth away from the sun after a predicted helium flash threatens to swallow all the planets in its solar system. And the astronauts must do this while avoiding a collision course with Jupiter because of the former's high gravitational force.
The film is based on a novella of the same name by Liu Cixin. However, while the film's major crisis is the devastating effect of Jupiter's gravitational pull, the novella grapples with an existential issue - society's mistrust of the scientists' prediction of the sun's helium flash.
The Wandering Earth was available on Netflix on April 30th 2019 and has an IMDB rating of 6.5 and 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
