A picnic is an affordable, fun and wholesome family activity. Just identify a suitable spot around town, pack a few snacks and sanitary essentials and voila! A day spent away from the confines of your walls with some open space to run around in.

Michuki Memorial Park Nairobi 
New spot alert! situated along Nairobi River between the Globe Cinema Roundabout and the Museum Hill interchange, is Michuki Memorial Park. Named after the late Minister for Environment John Michuki. It will be a free to access park and will be open to the public mid August.
Work to transform the 26-acre park has been shaping up after it was handed to Kenya Forest Service in April as one of the green spaces in Nairobi.Upon completion it will have a natural amphitheater with a sitting capacity of 500 persons which will be used for social events and exhibitions. How cool is that?
Arboretum
Arboretum and the word picnic are synonymous in Nairobi. This beloved spot is easily accessible from the CBD and comes complete with picnic tables and nature walks. You and the kids can also immerse yourself in some dendrology . At the entrance, there's a wealth of info on the trees in the park.  The charges for the park are Ksh 150 per adult and Ksh 100 Ksh per child. No cash transactions. Mobile payment only. 
Ngong Hills 
Ngong hills is an ideal picnic site. You can start with a hike over the hills, have lunch and unwind later. Visiting time is from 8.00am to 4.00pm and entry tickets are found at entry points. Those wanting to make visits earlier than this time can make arrangements to obtain tickets a day before. Please call Ngong Hills forest station ahead of your visit  0762 900 471.
Langata Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens is the perfect picnic spot, with its large and scenic location, it offers a pleasant ambiance for relaxing with the kids. The winding paths, secluded lawns and bandas make it a perfect picnic spot. They're not taking in too many people because of COVID-19  concerns so please call ahead +254 (0) 722 382 615.
Central Park Nairobi
Adjacent to the (In)famous Uhuru Park, It's smack in the middle of the city and is free to access. It has a colossal Nyayo monument that might spark an interesting history conversation with the kids. You can buy some chips & kuku in town and have a fuss-free picnic on a weekday.  
Uhuru Gardens 
Located along Langata road, Uhuru Garden is rich in history and is a great place to spend a day out with the kids. Open daily from 9:00AM- 4:00PM daily. Plenty of parking space available. Park access Charges are Ksh 100 for kids and Ksh 200 for adults
City Park 
Just 10 minutes away from the city center, City Park offers 60+ hectares of green space in addition to botanic gardens and historical landmarks. Your kids will enjoy the history behind this free to access park. Please don't feed the monkeys. They'll start getting aggressive. But they usually just ignore people chilling in the park. So don't fret.
