As the saying goes in Hollywood, for every successful sequel there must be a spin-off, a prequel or another sequel. In this instance, director Matthew Vaughn's runaway success with Kingsman: The Secret Service and The Golden Circle practically guaranteed a prequel.
Starring Ralph Fiennes, and his protege Harris Dickison, the story isn't entirely laid out. However, it appears to be set in World War 1. Rasputin, the famous Russian holy man, is also present in the trailer.
This movie seems far removed from the average showing of the Kingsman sequel. While we shall miss Eggsy (Taron Edgerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and Harry (Colin Firth), a Fiennes leading role is very welcome. His spy role as James Bond's M isn't that far removed from a world of espionage. So it isn't that hard to imagine him playing a period spymaster.
Fiennes says to Dickison, "Real power lies in understanding who it is you're truly fighting, and how they can be defeated." But it's not clear who this first King's Man enemy is. Since the movie is set during The Great War, the enemies could be the Ottomans, the Germans, or the Austrians. But if we are going by the cunning satire of the first Kingsman movie, it could be a villain as unpredictable as Sam L Jackson's Valentine.
Fiennes and Dickison's relationship echoes the mentor-apprentice one of Eggsy and Harry. There are splashes of sword fights, explosions, an appearance by Gemma Aterton and Djimon Honsou.
The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance, Stanley Tucci, Daniel Bruhl, Tom Hollander and Robert Aramayo. Their roles haven't been revealed yet. This Kingsman prequel is not Kingsman 3 which Vaugh confirmed will be "the conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship" and will be shot back-to-back with the prequel. Fans guess Kingsman 3 will happen in early 2021.
The director also said that he is planning a movie based on the Kingsmen American counterparts, Statesmen. There will also be a TV show.
The King's Man premieres February 14 2020.
