Kenya is full of poets from all walks of life. Some stick to the traditional form and styles while others are modern and do not conform to traditional and stifling rules. Here are a few Kenyan women who fall in the broad spectrum of poetry in Kenya.
Micere MugoMicere Githae Mugo has been hailed as a 'Kenyan Literary Heroine' and named one of the topmost influential writers in Kenya right next to Ngugi wa Thion'go. She has written 6 books including

Alexis Teyie She is a Kenyan writer whose poetry has been featured in the Jalada,
Afrofutures and
Language issues, as well as the
Black Girl, Seeks anthology. She describes herself as a radical Marxist, a feminist and activist who works to incorporate queer, trans and disability awareness in her work and what she supports.
Michelle AngwenyiShe is a Kenyan poet who was shortlisted for the 2018 Brunel Africa International Poetry Prize among others. Her work has appeared in Popula, Jalada and ID anthology just to mention a few. She also has her work featured in an upcoming book,
New-Generation African Poets.Anne MoraaAnne is a storyteller, writer, poet, performer and editor. Her work has been published in Short Story Day Africa, Brainstorm, Jalada and the Wide Margin. She most recently co-wrote, produced and performed in
Too Early for Birds: The Brazen Edition which is a play that made invisible women in Kenya's history visible.
Mumbi MachariaMumbi is a 22-year-old poet who was a runner up in the 2016 Poetry Slam Africa competition and won the Poetry After Lunch Recognition Award in 2018. She has been noted as one of the most prolific female Spoken Word Poets in East Africa. She has been featured in Kwani? And NTV's the Trend. She curates poetry events in Nairobi, teaches writing workshops and performs all over East Africa.
