WhatsApp is testing a feature that would allow users to share their statuses on the app with other social media apps such as Facebook.
WhatsApp status is a feature much like Instagram Stories where users can share videos, pictures or other forms of multimedia for only 24 hours where their friends can only respond to them via direct message. Beginning on Wednesday, participants of the beta program were able to see a new sharing option beneath their status, which can be used to post a status directly to their Facebook story or send it to another app like Instagram, Gmail, or Google Photos.
According to The Verge, WhatsApp states that the sharing option does not link your WhatsApp account to your Facebook account seeing as the company is owned by Facebook. In 2014, after the acquisition, WhatsApp promised that it wouldn't share user data with Facebook and said that it would function independently.
However, in 2016 the company said it would start sharing user data with Facebook. In 2017, WhatsApp was fined Sh12 billion by the European Commission for misleading authorities on how much data it will share with Facebook.
This sharing feature comes after Facebook announced plans to allow users of its three main apps to share messages on a single technical backend.
WhatsApp Status was launched in 2017. Having already accumulated 500 million users worldwide, it will be the first place to display ads on WhatsApp.
