Today is World Toilet Day, an official United Nations international observance day to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis where over 4 billion people don't have access to a safe toilet. Did you know that you will spend an average of three years of your entire life on a toilet? It is and will always be an important, though unglamorous, part of your life.
The humble loo has also appeared at significant in pop culture history. Elvis Presley famously died on one, and Mariah Carey got inspiration for her soul-stirring ballad Hero while answering nature's call. Toilets also appear regularly in movies, but that wasn't always the case because they were considered offensive. Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 horror film Psycho was the first time a mainstream movie showed a toilet on screen.
Since then, the toilet has been the scene of some really memorable cinematic scenes. Here we look back.
1. Psycho
It's hard to believe now, but this harmless scene where Janet Leigh flushes a motel toilet in that famous bathroom scene, literally made audiences lose their shit (excuse the pun) since toilets were virtually never seen in American cinema.
2. Jurassic Park
On a rainy night, a greedy lawyer gets dunked, head first, into the jaws of a T-Rex while seated on an outdoor toilet. Who even comes up with this stuff? Savage!
3. Dumb and Dumber
As a prank, Jim Carrey's chip-toothed character Lloyd laces Jeff Daniels' Harry's coffee with a laxative before he goes to a girls place to pick her up for a date. The rest is comedic [brown] gold.
4. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
That same year, Jim Carrey got his own shot at toilet comedy - well two. Including THAT iconic "Do not, go in there!" line.
5. Friday
Ice Cube's iconic comedy Friday caught him paying his film dad, John Witherspoon, a visit while perched on his porcelain throne. And what better line to sum up 90s parenting that this one: "I spent your shit for 22 years, now you can't smell mine for 5 minutes. Close the door!"
6. Trainspotting
"I fantasize about a massive, pristine convenience. Brilliant gold taps, virginal white marble, a seat curved from ebony, a cistern full of Chanel No. 5... and pieces of raw silk toilet roll." - Mark Renton's (Ewan McGregor) heroine-fuelled daydreaming before finding the worst toilet in Scotland. Don't do drugs kids.
7. There's Something About Mary
Toilets are for number 1, and number 2. But it can be for other uses too, especially if you're preparing for a frisky night out with Cameron Diaz, as an embarrassed Ben Stiller found out (TWICE!).
8. The Big Lebowski
The Dude, one of cinema's most chill characters, was the unfortunate recipient of a chocolate swirly in probably the worst case of mistaken identity possible.
9. American Pie
The 90s was a great decade for cinematic toilets apparently. And the decade's most outrageous, most daring, most unapologetic comedy movies of all, couldn't pass by without its very own hilarious toilet scene. Poor Finch!
10. Slumdog Millionaire
How bad would you want to meet your hero. Enough to take a shit bath? Yikes!
Honourable Mention...
Game of Thrones
Even one of the most prestigious TV dramas of our time isn't too big to give us a toilet scene. Tywin, the fearsome head of the Lannister clan met a stinky end when the son he loves to hate, Tyrion, planted a couple of cross-bow arrows into his chest while he was pants down communing with nature.
