It's a win for DC with Diana of Themyscira, princess of the Amazons AKA Wonder Woman's triumphant return to the theaters amid a worldwide pandemic. In 1984, Diana Prince as she's known by her fellow archeologists at the Smithsonian Museum in the District of Columbia, is living an unassuming life. One day, a magical stone, a new clumsy colleague and conman who masquerades as a successful businessman disrupt everything.
Diana (Gal Gadot) and her awkward colleague Barbara (Kristen Wiig) are left in charge of an ancient stone that has the power to grant wishes. Remember Diana's pilot boyfriend from the first movie from 3 years ago? Diana wants him back. She secretly shares her wish with the stone and what do you know...she gets what she wants.
Meanwhile, Barbara who idolizes Diana wants the stone to give her Diana's secret sauce that makes her so popular. The grace, the style...the whole shebang. The stone grants her wish and oh boy, she goes on a wild trip with her new-found powers.
Oh, Barbara gets a little too flirty with conman Maxwell Lord who steals the stone in her custody and his wish is for him to possess its power. Yup. He wants to become the stone. What ensues is pandemonium as Max goes on a rampage indiscriminately granting everyone their wish in return for something (a steep price unbeknownst to them.)
The world descends into pure chaos as megalomaniac Max and Barbara go on unhinged misadventures with their new found powers. It's hard to hate them though. You almost feel sympathetic. The film shows us their back stories; underdogs who had a really hard time while growing up and now have all this power. They can't help but let it go to their heads.
It's up to Wonder Woman to make a huge sacrifice and save the world from the destructive duo. Expect nail biting combat and spectacular visuals.
Wonder Woman 1984 is a social commentary on greed and the dangers of hedonism. It's mind blowing what some people would wish for if they had the chance.
