The fast pace of the modern world makes it difficult to really appreciate the authentic things in life; be it reading a newspaper as opposed to scrolling through your twitter feed, or people opting to watch the most anticipated films from the comfort of their homes instead of the cinema because hey, tech advancements. In as much as it may seem convenient to catch a movie from your couch, there are still a number of good reasons why going to the big screen is still worth your while;
The larger than life screen: You have to admit that the size of the screen increases the excitement and intensity of watching a movie. Not to mention the dramatic sound effects and loud music. Plus, there's no better way to experience a 3D movie than on a theatre screen, the effects seem so real.
Popcorn, hot dogs and ice cream: I don't know about you, but the thought of sinking in my teeth in a large pack of caramel popcorn gets me super excited to hit the cinemas. One subconsciously gobbles them down while watching the movie, especially during intense moments. I know what you're thinking, you can make a large bowl of popcorn from the comfort of your home but, let's face it there's nothing better than the cinema popcorn.
The trailers: If you are amongst the good Kenyans who actually make it to movies on time, then you'll have the privilege of viewing the trailers of the movies currently showing and those that will soon hit the cinemas. You'll be able to create an informed watch list for your next cinema visits.
Make it a date night: There's a reason dinner and a movie is the classic date plan. Movies makes for the perfect Friday night plan. Staying indoors can get boring so you can spice it up by exploring the outdoors for a late-night movie. Why not even try out a cinema that you've never been to before?
The ambience: The surround sound, the air conditioning, the pitch dark theatre. They all add to the enjoyment of a movie; it increases the dramatic effect and intensity to the onscreen action. The communal feeling of sharing a movie experience with other people in a cinema hall is also singular. You simply can't recreate the cinema ambience at home.
Focused attention: The strict "no phone" rule will inevitably have you give the movie your full attention. There are thousands of distractions that come with watching a movie at home; the endless phone buzzing, the constant need to continuously get food which leads to perpetual pausing of the movie and eventually losing track the storyline.
This March, take advantage of the mVisa Nairobi Movie Week and fall (back) in love with the cinemas. See you at the movies!
