History was made this week as Watu Wote became the first Kenyan film to be nominated for an Academy Award. The movie was selected in the Short Film (Live Action) category and will compete for the famous golden statuette against three American films (DeKalb Elementary, The Eleven O'clock, My Nephew Emmett) and one British entrant (The Silent Child).
Interestingly, the movie already has one Oscar award which it won at the 44th Student Academy Awards competition in September 2017. The long list of awards collected by Watu Wote makes for impressive reading: Studio HamBurg Newcomer Award, German Newcomer Award for Cinematography, as well as awards at the Brooklyn Film Festival and Bermuda Film Festival.
So, what is this acclaimed movie all about?
The German connection
"Watu Wote" is a Swahili phrase which translates to "All of Us". It is a German-Kenyan short film that was created by director Katja Benrath for her film school Master's thesis at the Hamburg Media School.
The 22-minute movie is based on the true story of the 2014 Mandera bus attack by Al Shabaab militia that killed 28 people, but also displayed the heroic acts of Muslim passengers who shielded their Christian counterparts who were the main target of the extremist attackers - in the process, some lost their own lives to save tens of other lives.
A star cast
The movie has another Oscars connection in the form of its two American-Somali leads Barkhad Abdirahman and Faysal Ahmed. The two appeared in 2013 Academy Award Best Picture nominee Captain Phillips. They are joined by 24-year-old newcomer Adelyne Wairimu, Kenyan TV presenter Charlie Karumi and Gerald Langiri who plays a GSU officer.
When can I see it in Kenya?
The movie actually premiered in Kenya on the same day that it was nominated for an Oscar. The red-carpet evening at the Junction Mall was graced by the director as well as select cast and crew. Here's the moment during the premiere that they all realised they were nominated for an Oscar.
