The synopsis for The Thing About Jellyfish reads ;
After her best friend dies in a drowning accident, Suzy is convinced that the true cause of the tragedy must have been a rare jellyfish sting--things don't just happen for no reason. Retreating into a silent world of imagination, she crafts a plan to prove her theory--even if it means traveling the globe, alone. Suzy's achingly heartfelt journey explores life, death, the astonishing wonder of the universe...and the potential for love and hope right next door
Wanuri Kahiu shot into the limelight after her film Rafiki became the first Kenyan film to screen at Cannes earlier this year. The film was swiftly banned in Kenya by the ratings board KFCB due to its lesbian themes. She successfully sued the Kenya Film Classification Board, getting the ban to be lifted for seven days, allowing the film to be screened in Kenya so as to qualify it for the 2019 Best Foreign Film Oscar.
Wanuri, who is also the founder the Afrobubblegum Movement, joins a list of remarkable Kenyans who have recently made serious strides into Hollywood, including 2014 Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and filmmaker Judy Kibinge who in 2017 was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
