The Oscars Update Diversity Criteria for Eligibility

The Oscars will be making changes for its "Best Picture" eligibility. This, in an effort to "encourage equitable representation on and off-screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience", according to the Academy's statement.
The "diversity group" will include underrepresented groups (women, racial and ethnic groups), LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities. On-screen acting and storylines, "including at least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group"; Creative leadership positions, departmental heads and crew composition; Paid apprenticeships, internships and training; Audience development, from publicity and marketing to distribution will be the areas to be looked into by the Academy.
The guidelines will be enforced by the 96th Academy Awards ceremony in 2025, where films must meet at least two of the four standards for eligibility in "Best Picture" nomination.
