Willis Raburu Speaks on Botched Gengetone Festival

Over the weekend, Willis Raburu was the talk of town following images of him emceeing at Gengetone Festival, which allegedly attracted a low turnout, did rounds online. In a statement released on Sunday via Instagram, Raburu explained what went wrong at the Machakos People's Park-held event on Saturday (Oct. 30).
Setting the record straight, the media personality-cum-musician confirmed to not being the event's organizer, contrary to public opinion. "The Gengetone Festival was not my event. I attended basically as an emcee and as an [upcoming] artist. The pictures that you are seeing, I was hyping the guys who were there at the time", he further lamented, adding that "as the time progressed, more people started coming in".
Raburu also opined that the event was poorly coordinated as the artists' owed dues were not honored, hence [he] urged them not to perform until that was fulfilled. "I went to the backstage and started talking to the artists. They told me they wanted to perform but they had not been paid the other half of the money. The rule for most artists is that you pay half [of the agreed amount] before the event, then pay the other half before they perform," said the "Kalale" crooner.
"I hope this starts the conversation that artists need to be respected, need to be paid, and they should demand it and not be quiet," concluded Raburu.
The Gengetone Festival attracted a ticket fee of Kshs. 999 for regular, Kshs. 1499 (couples) and Kshs. 2500 for VIP.
