HBR Fires Breakfast Show Hosts; Fined Shs.1M
Homeboyz Radio has terminated contracts of breakfast show trio Shaffie Weru, Neville and DJ Joe Mfalme over "gross misconduct and an egregious breach of the company's editorial policies," according to a statement by the station. "The termination follows a comprehensive review of the comments made on the station on Thursday morning and their subsequent suspension from employment."The management further distanced itself from having any prior knowledge of the presenters' conversation on air. "The comments of said erstwhile employees were neither authorised, approved nor cleared with the company nor was the subject discussed and or authorised by the company's senior leadership."The breakfast show has since been suspended for six months, and the station fined one million shillings by the Communications Authority of Kenya. In addition, HBR has been directed to issue a public apology in two national newspapers, and adhere to statutory requirements including a review of their editorial policy. The move comes amid outrage on social media and pressure to hold both the presenters and the media house accountable. On Saturday afternoon, East African Breweries Limited (EABL) paused advertising on all programmes related to the presenters. In a statement, the beer manufacturer said the station went against the core tenets of inclusivity and diversity, of which it strictly upholds. The Media Council of Kenya has since issued a statement commending Radio Africa Group for sacking the trio.Official Statement: HOMEBOYZ RADIO TERMINATES THE SERVICES OF BREAKFAST TRIO pic.twitter.com/9FJES5SbKU
