On Tuesday, Kenyans online took to microblogging platforms in debate of the country’s generational music genres, Genge and Gengetone. Genge cropped up in early 2000’s, thanks to the then top record label boss Clemmo of Calif Records. The label saw emerging artists in the genre including Nonini and Juacali among others.

Gengetone, which sneaked its way into the music industry in 2018, is believed to have replaced Genge with the likes of Ethic Entertainment, Boondocks Gang and Gwaash blasting the airwaves. Based on the comments online, it is clear that each of the two genres developed loyal fanbases that resonated across the board. But, Genge took the day with 79% of the votes.
