Today I woke up to the saddening news that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has passed away at the age of 81 from a reported long illness. The fearsome Winnie was once married to Nelson Mandela, but is a freedom icon by her own rights having suffered torture and imprisonment under Apartheid.
She was also a vocal critic post-Apartheid and has previously attracted media attention for such things as calling Mandela a sell-out, and most recently criticising now former President Zuma. Her legend has been immortalized in numerous documentaries and films including 2011 drama Winnie Mandela which starred American singer/actress Jennifer Hudson in the title role and 2013's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom with British actress Naomie Harris playing Winnie.
Twitter users, including world leaders like President Uhuru Kenyatta and celebrities such as Naomi Campbell and Viola Davis, took to Twitter to honour and remember the late legend.
