Today I woke up to the saddening news that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has passed away at the age of 81 from a reported long illness. The fearsome Winnie was once married to Nelson Mandela, but is a freedom icon by her own rights having suffered torture and imprisonment under Apartheid.She was also a vocal critic post-Apartheid and has previously attracted media attention for such things as calling Mandela a sell-out, and most recently criticising now former President Zuma.
