Truth be told, there have been a good number of fashion runway shows that have taken place this year but this by far has to be the most lavish and entertaining one to have taken place, thereby earning it a five-star rating in our books!
'Luxe' and 'bourgeois' were given an entirely new meaning as the show featured designers from different cultures- 4 from Kenya (Deepa Dosaja, Ubuntu, Moshions, LilaBare, Niku Singh, Aprelle Duany) one from Rwanda ( Haute Baso ), one based in London (Penny Winter), Somalia (Qaal Designs) and one from Nigeria(I am Isigo). It was easy to tell that they paid close attention to detail and exquisiteness: -  this could be seen from the 5000 white handmade origami birds' decor that hang majestically from the roof or the clear plastic chairs garnished with white cushions or the perfectly designed lookbook placed on each guest's chairs, I mean the list goes on. Here's a list of fab and drab moments:
  1. The Designers
Penny Winter's collection was bold and stylish with an all-black theme ranging from sexy swimwear to unique dresses. What's even more fascinating is that she has dressed the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama. Additionally, Deepa Dosaja showcased an array of colours all which exuded a high fashion element- the beauty of her brand is the uniqueness of the design. Plus, Niku Singh had a beautifully dramatic line of neck pieces with a gold and silver touch.
  1. The Bitings and Drinks
It was quite evident that they had a sufficient budget for the bitings because, during the entire twenty-minute break, they just kept on coming! They were finger-licking good and comprised of beer battered prawns, cheese samosas, chicken dumplings, chicken and cheese balls and many more! Moet Chandon champagne was also served in plenty as the welcome drink as people interacted amongst each other- it was an appropriate drink for the luxurious event.
  1. The Models
Dripping melanin and made of steel, the models did well in showcasing each designer looks effortlessly. What I loved most about them is their unique looks and features: the majority of the female models were a perfect depiction of the Africa woman with their shaven heads while the male models were a perfect mix of both slim, toned and built African men. It's not the easiest thing to descend a flight of stairs and still remain elegant but the models defied all odds and strutted the runway in the best way possible.
4. The MC's
Annabelle Onyango and Chimano commanded attention with their eloquence, humour and cohesiveness. As if this wasn't enough, they were both stylish in their wear- which they changed in between breaks- with a black and white theme. They actively engaged with the crowd and showed knowledge of the designer's work- a point which most MC's miss out on. They made the event all the more enjoyable. Chimano also sang a verse from his band, Sauti Sol's song so perfectly it received a standing ovation!
  1. The Music
The DJ's mix was a perfect illustration of the designer's personality. He started it on such a high note when he played a mix of house music while Deepa Dosaja's line was being showcased and maintained this uber amazing mixes throughout the event.
Drab
  1. Delayed Start
The show started off an hour or so later than the indicated time, which was perfect for the African timers and which also enabled a lengthier amount of time for interactions and networking.
