Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) have some of the loudest collective voices on Twitter. When we rally behind something on the Twitter, it tends to have real-world repercussions. Just ask CNN who had to retract a negative statement about Kenya and send an executive over to personally apologise. Or President Obama's speechwriter who revealed in his memoirs how the White House was brought to a stand-still so as to deal with a statement that had angered KoT.
A 2015 report showed that Kenya surpassed the U.S and the UK in tweeting about political conversations. So, it being an election year, with not one, but two general elections, Kenyan Twitter in 2017 was naturally dominated by political hashtags, although we did put aside political topics on occasion.
Here is a list of the most popular hashtags this year.
#UhuruChallenge
President Uhuru Kenyatta was in the spotlight for commissioning 'new projects' back in January. This was seen as a bid to strengthen his election re-run later in the year. Here is one funny tweet.

#DoctorsJailed
Kenya experienced a crippling health crisis this year with the doctors strike going on for more than 73 days. Things took a turn when the leaders of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Doctors Union (KMPDU) were arrested. Twitter served as the tool for seeking the release of the arrested doctors with that hashtag.

#NASAFlagbearer
As the country was headed towards the general elections, NASA hadn't announced their Presidential candidate. In April, NASA made the announcement with Raila Odinga as the flag bearer and there was a heated discussion on Twitter.

#Nakumatt
Nakumatt supermarket's woes started around June and there was so much speculation as to why the mega-retailer was facing financial challenges and whether it will remain in operation.

#GitheriMan
The tense elections in Kenya got some light moment after Githeri man. The man who was captured holding a paper bag of the local dish, githeri, was the subject of memes and hilarious tweets. Lucky for him, his photo opened several doors for the man.

#YouCantKillUs
IEBC's head of IT Chris Musando's death was a shock to Kenyans. Twitter was ablaze with tweets under that hashtag telling the killers of Musando that they can't silence every Kenyan.

#VifarangaVyaKompyuta
Hawa viongozi ni vifaranga vya kuku, vifaranga vya kompyuta, kompyuta ndio iliwataga, kompyuta iliangulia, kompyuta ikawatoa… vifaranga vya kompyuta." (Translated to: These leaders are chicks, chicks of computers, computers laid them as eggs, computers lay on the eggs, computers hatched them… chicks of computers). This is the statement that Raila Odinga made after the Supreme Court failed to uphold the initial Presidential election back on August 8th. Kenyans just had to poke fun.

Kenya this year lost another prominent person, Bishop Cornelius Korir. The 67-year old was announced dead on arrival at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after a short illness.

#MelaninSautiSol
Sauti Sol's mega collabo with Nigerian star Patoranking had Kenyans interested. This is despite the fact that KFCB's Ezekiel Mutua had banned the song. The song, Melanin, is also one of the most viewed on YouTube this year.

#Chilobae
IEBC Commissioner Ezra Chiloba was also the centre of attention this year. The man who only revealed to the world during the August 2017 Presidential elections was lauded by ladies for his good looks. That is not all. His pronunciation and accent was also being praised, especially on how he pronounced 'Form Tharri Fourre Bee' (form 34 B). Well, the later hashtag, #Chilobye wasn't as popular after he was forced to take a break due to mounting pressure for electoral reforms on the repeat October elections.

#280Characters
Twitter doubled their 140 characters setting to 280 characters. It's funny how Kenyans were ready to welcome this new feature with very crazy tweets.
