American reality television series I Am Jazz will premiere on our screens tonight on TLC, DStv channel 172 at 08:55 PM. It follows Jazz Jennings, a 15 year-old transgender girl assigned male at birth. The South Florida teen was diagnosed with gender dysphoria at age 5 becoming one of the youngest publicly documented people to be identified as gender dysphoric.
Gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder is the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity to be opposite to one's biological sex.
Jazz’s parents Greg and Jeanette decided to support her female gender identity by her fifth birthday. They will appear on the show alongside her three siblings and grandparents as the family talks about their experiences with Jazz’s transition. Jazz’s challenges as she joins high school while grappling with being transgender will also be highlighted.
Following public outcry that included an online petition from subscribers who believe Jazz’s story is inappropriate for Nigerian audiences, Multichoice Nigeria has pulled I Am Jazz from its schedule.
In a statement published by BellaNaija, Multichoice says, "MultiChoice is aware of the concerns raised by our viewers accross various platforms about the airing of I am Jazz…After careful consideration and wide consultation from various stakeholders, MultiChoice informs its esteemed subscribers that the mini-series has been pulled off the schedule."
The series is still on schedule for broadcast in Kenya.
