Tin Tin is a restaurant frozen in time. The establishment, which is located on the ground floor of the KICC, is the iconic building's oldest tenant, having opened its doors in April 1978. The walls tell the story of James and Anna Tin, two Chinese immigrants who met and fell in love on Kenyan shores after fleeing the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in the 1940s. Thirsty for adventure, they moved from Mombasa, where they had lived and worked for almost 40 years, to Nairobi to start a restaurant, which they named Tin Tin.
At the entrance, two statues of Chinese guardian lions welcome you. Once inside, an oriental room divider separates the one half of the restaurant from the other.
We asked to have Tin Tin's signature dishes. We were served chicken wings, which we were told are quite popular with the patrons. The chicken is marinated overnight before it's grilled. Next was a succulent beef stir fry served with Italian spinach (This was a favourite with everyone at the table), there was shredded chicken served with sweet rainbow peppers and fish fingers which was absolutely divine when dipped in the sauce the food was served with.
For dessert, we had assorted fruits (water melon slices, pineapple slices, kiwi, grapes, sweet melon and orange slices), fruit tarts - the sweet and sour custard filling complimented the short crust pastry so well, and chocolate eclairs.
Tin Tin has a few sweet deals. Every Friday is special dessert Friday, where you get a free dessert with your order. They have a package which gives a ticket to access the KICC rooftop (if you have not seen Nairobi from the top of KICC, you seriously need to add it to your bucket list), bitings and a drink for Ksh 1,000.
The spot also does outdoor catering and you can lease the space for events as well. Check out their website here.
