The 24
th annual Screen Actors Guild Award took place on January 21
st, 2018 in Los Angeles and history was made yet again. Sterling K. Brown from the smash hit TV series
'This Is Us' won the best actor for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series. This is a first and you know we're all about firsts. As we head to Black History Month, clearly there's a lot to celebrate about.
I assumed his tearjerker scenes made for his win because that man can cry a river. The Screen Actors Guild Awards which usually honours performances in TV series and films is like what Kenya had in Riverwood Awards.
This Is Us also won big at the awards for best ensemble cast in a TV series. This is huge because NBC, which produces the show, has not clinched such an award since
Grey's Anatomy in 2006.
This Is Us was up against popular TV shows like
The Crown,
Game of Thrones and
Stranger Things. Also of interest is that Susan Kelechi Watson stars in the series. She is of Jamaican descent but her name 'Kelechi' is Nigerian, Igbo, which means 'Thank God.' Our African names are a source of pride too.
Sterling K Brown, while accepting the award said, "What a blessing it is to do what you love for a living. What an honour it is to be recognised by your peers for a job well done. To all those people out there still hustling, trying to make it, the fame won't sustain you, the money won't sustain you. The love…keep that love alive. It'll keep you going."
