The 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony took place on January 28th in New York. There were major highlights that included the big win by Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar. The South African band, Ladysmith Black Mambazo also won their fifth Grammy Award and they were the only African act to win this year.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is an all-male choir based in South Africa and they took the Best World Music Album award. This was for their album, Shaka Zulu revisited: 30th Anniversary Collection. The music group has been singing to audiences for the last 55 years. This has been possible because the aged band members are usually replaced by younger ones who are interested in music. Their flair for singing traditional Zulu music has gotten them a lot of global recognition. In Kenya, Swahili Nation would have been an almost equal band to Ladysmith but they were faced with challenges that led to them disbanding. Swahili Nation's 'Hakuna Matata' was one of their most popular songs.

Their album, Shaka Zulu, was re-recorded in tribute to the founding member Joseph Shabalala who passed the band to his children. Ladysmith has been nominated 19 times. Africans are still achieving greatness.
Other black stars that won big were Bruno Mars, who won 6 Grammys and Kendrick Lamar who walked away with 5 Grammys. Kenya's Octopizzo was also invited to attend the ceremony as a guest. We are hopeful the next time they invite him he will be going there as a nominee. Unfortunately, only 17 awards out of the 86 categories went to women with the likes of SZA getting overlooked. Kesha's performance was also thrilling on the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaign.
