Forget the gym, when was the last time you played football? Sukuma Twende Trust made sure adults who've been avoiding the pitch got to play some soccer but only for 15 minutes each round. The Astroturf Football Tournament took place from 17th- 19th May 2018 with the final event dubbed the MoonWalk taking place on the 19th, at the Oshwal Religious Centre.
The Astroturf football tournament had about 30 teams of about 5 each. The teams composed of corporates; Samsung, Toss and schools such as Visa Oshwal Academy and Peponi School. The rounds had about 12 teams going against each other every day until the last day where the winners would eventually walk away with a trophy. The kids from Diamond FC played really well scoring several goals in all the matches they participated in. I also saw a young lady who was part of the Visa Oshwal football team. The Peponi and Toss teams were also very formidable outdoing their rivals.
Parents also came out in numbers to support their kids. You could see them cheering the youngsters on and reminding them of simple football codes such as greeting their opponents once the match was over. I found that very encouraging.
All proceeds from the Astroturf tournament and the Moonwalk event would go to helping local schools build sports facilities and help in fighting malaria. The official flagging off of the walk begun at around 7:30 pm. The founder and CEO of Osho Chemicals, Manoj Shah was present and contributed Ksh. 1.1 million to the charity. Honourable Jayendra Malde, MCA of Parklands ward was also there to support the course.
Oshwal Religious Centre hosted around 2,000 people and while some were on the walk others contributed from Ksh.5,000 to Ksh.10,000 and more. The music got people towards the field and had kids dancing to Zumba music. The highlight must have been when 'Michael Jackson' appeared on stage and gave us the legendary 'Moonwalk' dance. Yes, it was a moonwalk dance at the Moonwalk event!
Food was in plenty and the team ensured everyone was fed. People were also offered tea, juice and water. The Sukuma Twende Trust team really outdid themselves and they said they had collected more money than they had initially targeted.
