The songs that rocked and the talents behind them

The numbers are in, and here are the beats and sounds that captured the hearts of KE online audiences – according to the number of likes and views on YouTube

Hallelujah -Willy Paul Ft Nandy

In spite of a few PR missteps, Willy Paul is arguably one of Kenya’s top performing artists. He has transitioned from the gospel industry to secular music, but has still been able to maintain his massive fan following. The Hallelujah video, featuring Tanzania’s songstress Nandy caused quite a frenzy on social media, receiving mixed reactions from the public in relation to Pozee’s faith. The jury is still out on whether or not we should categorize this song as gospel or secular. However, the song produced in March has since received 7.4 million views by the time this article was written.

Wamlambez -Sailors

The lyrics may be a little questionable and controversy seemed at home with it, but this song made a mark as one of 2019’s undeniable street anthems. The song trended on social media with the wamlambez challenge giving it even more traction. The most famous recorded wamlambez challenge took place at a Chicken Inn outlet, followed by another viral video featuring mourners at a funeral dancing and twerking to the song. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua banned the song from being played outside clubs, claiming the song promotes pornography. Since its release in April, the song has gained 4.4 million views on YouTube.

Pandana -Ethic

This young Hip Hop group took the Kenyan music industry by storm, and are now signed to Universal Music Group Subsidiary AI Records. They made it to YouTube’s top trending list with their hit song Lamba Lolo in 2018.  Their fan base goes across the board -from Millennials to Generation Z. There has also been quite the uproar and debate regarding the group’s style of music.  Their song Figa would have been another top contender had it not been pulled down for a YouTube violation, following an embarrassing rip off of another song titled ‘Cono’. Pandana however, had received 3.7 Million Views on YouTube by the time this article was written.

Extravaganza-Sol Generation

Sometimes the best work comes from a team effort, as seen from Sol Generation’s first song, Extravaganza. There is no doubt the award-winning band Sauti Sol has been among Kenya’s most beloved artiste list since back in the day. They have had many hit singles and collaborated with a number of international and local acts including Patoranking, Khaligraph Jones and Nyashinski. Sol Generation has already released major bangers such as Lucy by Bensoul and Pombe Sigara by Nviiri. Extravaganza as released in May and has gotten 3 million views and counting.

Chukua Selfie -Collabo

This has been the biggest collabo of 2019, and it is brimming with the baddest of bad artistes in the music industry. The song features chart-topping come-back artiste Nyashinski, the King of Genge Juakali, rapper Khaligraph Jones, new artist Naiboi and the lyrical Fena Gitu. This was more than a song; it was the start of a campaign against HIV/AIDS that advocated for people to use self-test kits. This message was however not very clear in the video, but it still made for great visuals, with media and entertainment personalities such as Talia Oyando and DJ Shiti making appearances. The star-studded collabo has bagged 2.5 million views since the release in March.

Regardless of the morality question that dogs most club bangers, the content remains highly consumed. No doubt the Gengetone style might one day go down as part of Kenyan music history. For now, let’s let the kids have a little fun.
