As we bid #Njaanuary goodbye, a special event will take place on January 31st, 2018. A total lunar eclipse will occur with a blue moon known as a Super Blue Blood Moon.  The blood moon is seen as earth is passing between the moon and the sun which gives the moon a red tint.
Here are a few things to know as we wait here in Kenya;
  1. Kenya will experience a partial lunar eclipse
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the eclipse will occur at sunset, 6: 57:42 pm and end at 7: 08:31 pm.
  1. What is a Blue Moon?
A blue moon is when we have a full moon appearing in the sky. The most recent Blue Moon was seen in July 2015. The second Blue Moon will occur in late March this year.
  1. Why will the Super Blue Moon be special?
Earth will see a Blue Moon and a Super Moon at once. A Super Moon is when the moon is closest to the planet so it will be a full moon, which will be close to earth like never before and it will have a red tint. This is what is now called a Super Blue Blood Moon. It normally does not happen simultaneously which makes it rare. The last Super Blue Blood Moon occurred in 1866.
  1. How to experience this event
If you won't be able to see it as it happens for those few minutes, the NASA website will live stream the rare occurrence.
150 years later and we are here to experience this remarkable occurrence.
