Supa Modo is such a tearjerker and it's not something you expect while going into the cinema. The movie is about a young girl, whose dream of becoming a superhero is threatened by terminal illness, inspiring her village to rally together to make her dream come true. It is what you'd call a 'movie within a movie.'
The movie starts with a scene in the hospital where our hero Jo (played by newcomer Stycie Waweru) and her friends are watching a Chinese movie with the funny DJ translations from Mike (played by Johnson Gitau Chege). Jo's mother Kathryn (played by Maryanne Nungo) and mischievous sister, Mwix (played by Nyawara Ndambia) visit Jo at the hospital and things are not looking great. Her doctor informs Kathryn that there's nothing that can be done to save Jo to everyone's dismay. This makes Kathryn follow an unconventional path that has interesting consequences.
There are several things to love about the film and one of them is that it's locally set. The movie which was shot in Limuru, on the outskirts of Nairobi makes one remember a home in the rural sides. For most Kenyans, that kind of setting resonates with where their grandparents or parents live. The dialogues which are in English, Swahili, Sheng (Kenyan slang) and Kikuyu (one of the local languages) are super hilarious. This makes the movie very relatable. The story has a most interesting arch in how it ends with all the kids coming out in support of Jo. Did I also mention the portrayal of the typical Kenyan mom? That had me laughing hard.
The movie is splendid but the sad ending was unexpected. Jo had been suffering from a terminal illness but the movie had progressed in a style that did not prepare the audiences for what happened next. My mom shed a tear (okay, maybe, just maybe I also did). If you can look past that shocker, all will be well.
