Sudan, the world's last Northern white Rhino who lived at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia,Kenya passed away after 45 years - equivalent to 90 in human years- due to age-related complications. His death was not unexpected given that most rhinos have a lifespan of between 40-50 years.
Sudan was one of the only three living northern white rhinoceroses in the world, and the last known male of his subspecies. His death leaves behind only two females - his daughter and granddaughter - of the subspecies alive in the world. He survived extinction caused by the rampant poaching that was prominent back in the 1970's-1980's which was brought about by the high demand for the rhino's horn- he escaped extinction when he was moved to  Dvur Kralove Zoo.
It's in light of this moment that the importance of conservation of extinct animals should be of state importance. All hope is not lost, there seems to be hope of conserving the Northern white rhino via IVF techniques.
