Kenya has something to yet again pride herself on. The flag flies high, propelled by smart strides taken in Kenya's film industry. Film enthusiasts will second this after they sit through the fiercely riveting movie, Subira, coming to cinemas this weekend.
Directed by Ravneet Sippy Chadha, Subira takes off to the world of a determined girl in Lamu, called Subira, who is a victim of obstacles and challenges in pursuit of her dreams. She dreams of swimming in the ocean, for that strums at her heart's guitar, but all odds are against her. Brought up in an orthodox Muslim community, their customs and traditions have other plans for her, including marrying her off. Will Subira rough it, claw through the challenges and make it to where she wants to be?
Ravneet Sippy Chadha, also award winning director of Kibera Kid (2007), Charcoal Traffic (2008) and Tick Tock (2009) explains that this project was unique and close to her heart, as it draws inspiration from some of her personal deep-seated experiences.
During the recently held gala awards for Kalasha International Film and TV 2018, Subira scooped 5 awards: Best picture, Best director, Best editing, Best actress, and Best lighting.
This emotion-evoking film was first screened as a short story in 2008, and after incalculable acclaims including 15 international awards, it was transformed into a full length film.
This weekend, Subira looks forward to drawing you irredeemably into an unforgettable story of pain, sheer will and determination, starring Brenda Wairimu, Nice Githinji, and Melvin Alusa.
