You've seen the running online memes, you've probably slid into a few DMs yourself, or had yours slid into. DMs stand for direct messages. 'Slide into the DMs' is millennial internet slang that refers to the act of privately messaging another person on a social media platform, usually for romantic or amorous reasons. Hence the song, "It goes down in the DM" by American rapper Yo Gotti.
We asked our fans and staff to share their good, bad or ugly DM experiences, and these are some of the top responses:
This one time, a girl sent me a DM on Instagram after I had published a boomerang post while at a café having a milkshake. She wanted to join in. You know those kinds of texts. But it was her smooth creativity that impressed me. She wrote, "Milkshake tastes better when taken with another person." I was like, wow, yes, let's do this. Anthony
A guy once sent me a DM after seeing a picture of me on Facebook in boots. He goes on to tell me how he has a fetish for boots, especially thigh high boots like the ones I was wearing. He creepily divulged how he'd love to put on my boots after work just so he can feel the warmth in them. Yikes! Fiona
A good-looking lad sent me a follow request on Instagram. As soon as I accepted, he dropped me a message. I didn't reply so he persistently kept on messaging funny comments all week long until I wilted. The conversation thereafter flowed well, we exchanged numbers and met up for dinner. It did not amount to a relationship but we remained friends. Cynthia
A creepy guy, who was not enticing in the least bit, continuously flooded my DM so, I blocked his account. Only for him to stalk me on my other social media pages and continue with the trend by leaving awkward comments on my posts. I had to block him on the other sites as well. I hope I've seen the end of him. Sylvia
This one time I received a DM from a lady whom I had only ever met once. She had also just before that sent me an SMS (it's still a mystery where she got my number from). After a short chat, she went ahead to ask me out on a date which was a surprise to me. In most cases, it's the guy who asks, so it caught me by surprise. Still, I wouldn't miss that opportunity for the world, so I took her up on her date offer. Jesse
I had the unfortunate scenario of replying to a message from a guy and the events after escalated rather quickly. The guy was so persistent; he never gave up even after I continued to ignore him. He had already envisioned our life together and named our future offspring. Julie
Most of the time when a guy slides into my DM, they send a flattering pic of themselves, just to try and impress. But this one guy just skipped that whole part and made disturbingly overt sexual advances by sending a porn video. That was the most shocking thing ever, especially since he was a total stranger. Diana
While there are some sweet DM stories (some even resulting in romantic relationships), it's clear that a majority of experiences are either bad or outright ugly. So, if you're thinking of sliding into any DMs this Valentine's, why not learn a few things from the above experiences. Happy sliding!
