Shelter Children's Home in Kibiko,Ngong has been a child rescue centre that has raised close to 350 kids over three decades. Currently, they have 130 children under their full time care. They provide food, shelter, clothing and education to these vulnerable kids.
It's very expensive to run the home even with the help of well-wishers. That's why the founders came up with sustainability projects to supplement donated resources and help the home be self-sufficient.
They started an organic shamba and greenhouse in the home's compound to produce fresh vegetables for their kids' nutrition and sell the surplus to their neighbors.

They have a bountiful harvest and every Friday, they deliver their produce to homes in Ngong, Karen, Langata, Westlands, Riverside , Brookside, Lavington and Hurlingham areas. Check out their  online shop at shelterchildrendshome.org  to make an order.

They have livestock too for milk and manure production.
They've engaged the services of local women to assemble rechargeable solar lamps used in the home and also by small scale traders around town. They plan on expanding this solar lamp social enterprise all over the country. This will not only provide employment to hundreds of women in the country, but will go a long way in lighting up remote areas and financially support Shelter Children's Home.
If you'd like to see these initiatives for yourself, interact with the kids, or purchase a solar lamp or organic vegetables, contact Mr. Hanif Poona on 0707326495.
