Reel News: ‘Salem’ set to awe Kenyan Soap Opera Fans
Soap Operas have long been a staple of Kenyan Television and don’t seem to be going out of style soon. We’ve tuned in to Spanish and Filipino Soaps over the years and loved our locally produced ones just as much.
For four years, Selina has been the top Kiswahili Soap Opera on TV and now it’s coming to an end. Don’t fret though. There’s a new show in town that promises to be just as good. Maisha Magic recently announced that Salem will start airing on Maisha Magic East (DStv Channel 163 and GOtv Supa Channel 8) on Monday 11 April at 8.30 pm.
Salem’s storyline revolves around two families – The Mufasas and the Karanis. The film is a tale of inequality and the fine line between wealth and poverty.
Starring Mumbi Maina, Foi Wambui, Melvin Alusa, Brian Kabugi amongst other critically acclaimed casts, Salem is a riveting, thrilling and spectacular story about inequality- rich versus the poor, and about how fine the line between the two can be. It’s the story of relatable characters – people we know, or people we may be – and the situations they must fight their way out of, be they of their own doing or beyond their control. Ruth Apondi of the classic Kenyan Drama Tausi also makes a powerful TV comeback on the show.
Salem is a story about two families inhabiting separate but intersecting worlds: the Mufasa family in the high class, upmarket neighborhood of Karen and the humble Karani family in the high-density and chaotic Salem. The former lives a glossy life with cracks hidden beneath it, while the latter is a tight-knit and loving family- until everyone’s lives are turned upside down by a devastating event.
