With many events either postponed or cancelled during the Covid-19 lockdown, many people have created virtual parties of all kinds to keep each other entertained. Here are some quarantine parties that you could join or create with your family or friends
Netflix Party
This is a virtual watching party recently launched by Netflix. To host a Netflix Party, you will need to install the application on your Chrome browser after which you would choose a show to watch from your Netflix account. To start the party, share the URL with friends or family which they will input in their Chrome browsers to gain access to the show you are streaming. For the app to work, all the participants require a Netflix account. The software allows everyone watching the show to stay in sync even when rewinding and forwarding. Additionally, users can create fun icons to identify themselves and there's a chat window where you can all communicate.
Silent Zoom Party
Zoom videoconferencing application has proved to be very useful during quarantine to connect colleagues, friends and family. While most involve people speaking and exchanging ideas, new Zoom parties that involve silence have recently emerged. Experts claim that during periods of high stress it may be difficult to focus and hold information and thus having partners that keep you accountable can boost success. Silent Zooms have gained popularity especially with book-lovers since all you have to do is join, say hello and mute yourself as you all read the books together but alone. Many participants of silent Zooms have claimed an upscale of productivity from these interactions.
Group Sessions by Spotify
Spotify is planning to introduce a new feature known as Group Session that will allow two or more users who have paid for premium services in the same space to share control over the music that plays. The feature can be used amongst friends or family who are apart from each other.  To use the feature, the initiator will tap the connect menu after which a QR code will appear. The initiator's guests can then join the same session by scanning the code which will grant them access to play certain songs, skip, pause and even loop a playlist.
Squadded Shopping Party
Former L'Oréal brand manager, Elysa Kahn, launched a virtual social platform, Squadded Shopping Party which you could use to shop online with your peers. The platform is a browser extension that allows users to go shopping together on fashion e-commerce websites such as Asos and Nike. To get squadded with your peers, all you need to do is add the Chrome extension of the application to your browser, access your favourite store's website, log on to the platform and invite your friends by sharing the link with them.
Virtual trips
Although you can easily visit parks and go for a game drive, you can also choose to go on a virtual game drive. Ol Pejeta Conservancy airs SOFA SAFARIS on Instagram at 4.30 pm every day. The trip involves the Managing Director Richard Vigne and guides exploring the conservancy for live animal sightings. More information about the safaris is available on their Instagram page. There are similar services in South Africa offered by andBeyond and Wildearth and wildlife webcams are available at Lonely Planet, Explore and Aquarium of Pacific.
