Director Corin Hardy's second horror flick, The Nun is the prequel to The Conjuring franchise. It will give audiences the origin story of the demonic ghost Valak, who was first introduced in The Conjuring 2. The Nun is set in 1952 after a nun's suicide that prompts the Vatican to send Father Burke (Demián Bichir Nájeraand Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to investigate the Romanian abbey where the incident occurred.
They find the abbey hides a terrible secret in the form of a malevolent spirit, Valak, who roams its corridors disguised as a nun. The movie, which premiered on 5th September, grossed $231 million worldwide in it's opening weekend.
Valak is based on mythology drawn from the book, Key of Solomon, in which he is represented as a child that rides a two-headed dragon and is considered the prince of hell.
According to critics, the film received praise for it's cinematography, performances and accurate visuals. Filming in churches is banned in Romania so the crew had to construct the set from scratch. Warner Bros pulled all the stops by hiring horror film royalty like producer James Wan who is known for Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring and Gary Doberman who is behind the screenplay for Annabel and has co-credits on the screenplay 2017's film adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, It.
The film premieres locally, across all cinemas, this Friday 21st September. Beat the rush and book your seat in advance here.
