Rwandans around the world marked Kwibuka- meaning to Remember last week (April 7), which is an annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and massacre of the moderate Hutu, which lasts 100 Days - that is, the same duration of this tragedy, where nearly a million lives were lost.
In honour of #Kwibuka28, MyMovies.Africa hosted a global screening for ISETA - Behind the Roadblock, on Sunday April 10th, followed by a live conversation with British-Kenyan producer Nick Hughes and Rwandan co-producer & co-director, Eric Kabera.
ISETA - Behind the Roadblock is the story of Hughes revisiting the scene of brutal murders he witnessed on a quiet road in Kigali, at the beginning of the darkest 100 days in Africa's history.
Even though almost one million people were slaughtered, there is only one known segment of footage showing any actual killing, by this lone cameraman. Years later, this documentary revisits the scene, following Nick with victims, survivors, killers and witnesses. They were all unaware that they were filmed, and that the 1994 moment - unlike a dream, can be replayed.
As the footage returns to the community, friends and family re-live the tragedy, as they work with Nick to identify the victims, and eventually the killers. From the original footage, the story follows a thread of revelation, of so many souls lost amidst ethnic hatred, during one terrible hour on a quiet road in Kigali.
"The Genocide against the Tutsi stands as one of the most horrific events of the 21st century. This film is a very human story, behind the cold figures of the genocide, by putting a human face to that incomprehensible tragedy", said Nick Hughes.
