KenyaBuzz: What does a stylist do?
Beata: We do a variety of jobs. Generally, it depends on what type of styling the client wants. In a video/photo shoot, I will be scouting for the model, locations, and designers. During the shoot, I will be managing the time and what is going on during the shoot. I remember one time I did an underwear ad with Mohamed Bana (renowned fashion designer), and many did not understand the need of a stylist, since all was being advertised was the underwear. If I'm doing TV show styling, I'd need to know the network's preferences in terms of dressing of the TV presenters; it can range from no whites to no sleeveless.
KenyaBuzz: Who are some of the clients you have worked with?
Beata: I have my monthly clients and I also have the clients who come per shoot. Some of my monthly clients are Joey Muthengi, Adele Onyango and Amina Abdi. For corporates, there are some like B Magazine, Couture Africa, Mnet Africa, Nice 'n' Lovely and K24. Per shoot, I worked with Samsung.
KenyaBuzz: Why did you decide to become a stylist?
Beata: I stumbled upon it. I did not see myself as a stylist but I knew I wanted to become an entrepreneur. I was 18 and broke (your typical teenager) I ventured into photography with the most basic camera out there. So during shoots, some clients were not aware of what to wear and how to look. I gave them ideas of what they would try on. I was unknowingly preparing myself for the job. During my undergrad in USIU I would dress up and scout the location for the school magazine shoots. I was just picking whatever cloth I felt looked good on the model and what we were trying to bring out in each issue. When Couture Africa came around, I went with all my work and that is what I was hired for and learnt all about the job professionally.
KenyaBuzz: When did you start Ojwa Styling?
Beata: I gained a lot of knowledge about the job at Couture Africa, and two years later on June 1, 2016, I began my styling company.
KenyaBuzz: How would you explain your style?
Beata: It is very different from the norm. I do not follow trends at all. You know very well Nairobians follow trends. If I have to follow a trend it has to be unique, out of the box and edgy. I prefer dark colours; from black, purple and burgundy.
KenyaBuzz: Who inspires you style wise?
Beata: I know it is cliché but I adore Rihanna's style. She can wear a gunia (sack) over her head and she will make it work. She makes dressing up look like so much fun. She explores everything and anything which I like.
KenyaBuzz: What do you think about the fashion industry in Kenya?
Beata: Fashion is picking up tremendously in the country but we still have a long way to go. People are appreciating it more; news anchors and artists see the need of a stylist. Many corporates appreciate my work and see the need of a stylist during a shoot. Some do not see the need to pay for the service which can be hectic for us to function.
KenyaBuzz: Ladies tend to embrace good style, but what have you noticed from men's style?
Beata: The thing I love about men now, they do not mind being called metrosexual. Guys are getting comfortable channeling their feminine sides and are taking care of themselves.
KenyaBuzz: What fashion trend do you think should just die?
Beata: OMG! Wedge sneakers. I am done with them. Wedge heels too. I am not a fan of them. I feel the trend died five years ago and we should keep it that way.
KenyaBuzz: What are the essentials in your bag?
Beata: Lotion, lipstick, diary, hand sanitizer and money.
KenyaBuzz: Lipstick is a big thing for you, why is that?
Beata: I am obsessed with it. As I said dark colours are my go to. If I have a bright colour, I will try an ombre effect to mark it darker. I can never be seen wearing bright pink which is kinda typical. My lipstick has to be matte, I'm not a fan of the glossy look.
KenyaBuzz: What are your future goals?
Beata: I'm not really sure what I want, but all I know is Ojwa Styling has to go global.
