Many people, especially teenage girls, are going crazy for Aerial Fitness, the latest fad to hit the Nairobi fitness circuit. What's it all about? Aerial fitness involves the use of two lengths of fabric called 'silks' suspended from the ceiling. Participants use the silks to carry out gravity-defying moves while suspended mid-air, thereby experiencing the feeling of safe, weightless flight. It's described as 'a revolutionary combination of dance, yoga, gymnastics and flying' by
AER Africa co-founders Neel Chandaria and Andrea Hartley and it makes working out fun and exciting.
It was evident to us that everyone was indeed enjoying themselves immensely when we visited
CrossFit Kwetu gym in Gigiri last Saturday during the Aerial Silks class. Though the class mainly attracts teenage girls, there were also adults and younger children including a young boy.
We were amazed by the moves some of the youngsters were making; intricate, graceful, and highly technical. We can definitely see why the kids love it- it's a bit like being a star in the circus! I think it's the only exercise class in Nairobi that goes beyond the allotted time and parents literally have to drag their kids away. Not bad for a lesson that teaches social skills as well as having neurological and developmental benefits.
If you are interested in these or other intense and fun workouts that build strength, flexibility and endurance, you can find classes at three locations around Nairobi-
