Super Lisu is about Kendi, a young girl living in Nairobi, Kenya, with her single dad. She struggles with her self-esteem and is completely unaware of the power she possesses. After an unexpected encounter, she discovers the source of her super power - her natural hair!
Every time Kendi switches up her hairstyle, she gets different powers!  How cool is that?
We follow her adventures as she explores her unique abilities. The reader is kept in suspense, wondering what will happen next. As part of her journey, Kendi makes decisions which have an impact on the people she loves, a reminder that actions have consequences.
What do parents love most about Super Lisu? It is easy to read with fun illustrations. Recommended for children aged 7-12years, though the younger ones can enjoy it too if you read it to them, a couple of chapters a time. The characters and context are relatable - Kendi is witty, and many children share her feelings towards herself and her natural hair. Popular Swahili words are sprinkled here and there, giving the book a lovely and authentic feel. It celebrates the beauty of Kenya in a fun and educational way.
Author Yolanda Chakava does a great job in bringing this relatable character to life. Super Lisu is interesting and inspiring. It reminds us that we are unique and that heroes can come from anywhere, encouraging children to be proud of who they are. We can't wait for the sequel!
