A Kenyan filmmaker, Silas Miami, has been selected as one of the six participants in a pan-African screenwriting residency program called Realness.
The program involves a six-week incubation program in South Africa where the residents are given time to write and mentored on how to pitch their film projects and are given a chance to attend Durban Film Festival to pitch their projects. They are then given six weeks to fine-tune their projects and submit them for consideration for awards.
Each project is eligible for scholarships to attend Locarno Filmmakers Academy, Torino Film Lab Meeting Event, EAVE Producer's Workshop and La Fabrique des Cinemas du Monde in Cannes.
The 2019 Realness participants include;
● Athi-Patra Ruga - "The Lunar Songbook"-South Africa
● Beza Hailu Lemma - "The Last Tears of The Deceased"-Ethiopia
● Fanyana Hlabangane - "The Spirit Guest"-South Africa
● Hajooj Kuka - "African Titanics"-Sudan
● Iman Djionne- "Coura+Ouleye"- Senegal
● Silas Miami - "Miles"-Kenya
Ngendo Mukii, another Kenyan filmmaker was a participant in Realness 2018.
Silas Miami is a Capetown based filmmaker, performing artist and photographer. He has written two feature films; Supa Modo - Kenya's Oscar-nominated film, and Lusala, an upcoming Kenyan film.
