I remember the excitement of choosing a doll at a toy store as a little girl. I could spend hours  creating imaginary worlds with my dolls. Except too often those dolls didn't mirror myself. They always had  blonde straight hair and impossibly tiny waists.  They made me question identity  and even may have had an effect on my self-esteem. Growing up in Africa , I'm sure this experience is not exclusive to me.
Today the doll industry is making moves to do a better job of representing more girls in their offerings, and where the mainstream toy companies have fallen short, small businesses have taken up the mantle.
One such company is Halisi Africa, a Kenyan doll company that believes in affirming children's self confidence in who they are by providing dolls that look just like them.
Their range of dolls come in afros, locs, braids and cool Ankara dresses your kids  will love. Check out the dolls HERE.
