When trying to get kids to read more, comic books and graphic novels are not usually the first choice parents look into. Long considered as a second-rate form of literature, comic books may have acquired a bad rep with teachers and parents over the years but that shouldn't be the case.
Research from the University of Oregon found that comic books averaged 53.5, or more complex, words per 1,000. (READ MORE) That's more than children's books which average 30.9 and even adult books at 52.7 so your kid will be improving their vocabulary.
One study found that graphic texts promote learning and better recall (READ MORE). Another found that students had the best reading comprehension and enjoyed reading the most when they read graphic novels. They also motivate reluctant readers to pick up a book.
Not only are age appropriate comic books fun to read, they can expand your child's imagination, inspire them to write their own short stories  and help them with non- linear reading.
If your child has an interest in comic books, they can immerse themselves in a world of African comic books at Nairobi's Com-con (NAICCON) on December 4th. They'll meet other comic book enthusiasts and interact with comic book writers and illustrators.
