Any movie fan will agree that cold weather was made for binge-watching, whether it's a diving into the biggest Swahili telenovela in Kenya, Selina, or finally sitting down to watch Game of Thrones S1-8. It doesn't matter really what show or movie you decide to binge this weekend, but if you are looking for some suggestions in the right direction, may we recommend our must-watch movies on Showmax that will make your weekend worthwhile.
  1.     Supa Modo

Likarion Wainaina's Supa Modotells  tells the uplifting story of Jo (Stycie Waweru), a terminally ill nine-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a superhero. It's an impossible dream in the real world, but one that Jo's older sister Mwix (Nyawara Ndambia) is determined to fulfil even if it means defying their mother (Maryanne Nungo, Rush). Mwix convinces the whole community to rally behind her and make Jo's dream come true, in turn giving her the best last days of her life.
Arguably Kenya's most successful film yet, Supa Modo has won over 50 international awards including Best New Director (for Wainaina) at the Cape Town Film Festival, the Artistic Bravery Prize at the Durban International Film Festival 2018 and Best Screenplay at the Carthage Film Festival.
  1. The Big Sick
Written by Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and his wife Emily V Gordon, The Big Sick follows Kumail (played by Nanjiani), a Pakistani who falls in love with Emily, a white grad student, despite his parents' efforts to set him up with different Pakistani women. The Big Sick, which was based on Nanjiani's and Emily's real-life relationship, became one of the most-acclaimed films of 2017, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2017.
  1. Inglourious Basterds
Just like he did with Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino brings his own brand of vengeance or justice (depending on how you look at it) to historical atrocities - this time, the Holocaust. Inglourious Basterds takes us to Nazi-occupied France where a group of American soldiers take on a mission to assassinate Nazi leaders with the help of allied spies. While the movie features a star-studded cast of Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender and Eli Roth, the performance that really gives Inglourious Basterds  the jolt is Christopher Waltz as the sadistic Hans Landa.
3. Miss Sloane
In the political thriller Miss Sloane, Jessica Chastain plays Elizabeth Sloane, DC's finest lobbyist - the kind of cutthroat power broker every politician wants on their side - who finds herself in the line of fire when she decides to take on a powerful rival in a controversial gun bill. It's a role that was widely praised by critics, even earning Chastain a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in 2017. Chastain is joined by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mark Strong (Shazam).
  1. Bridesmaids
While Melissa McCarthy may have successfully transitioned from comedy to drama with her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me, no one can quite forget her delightfully outlandish performances that came before it, like Bridesmaids, for instance.
Bridesmaids follows a group of bridesmaids as they plan the wedding of one of their friends, while also testing female friendships and insecurities. No doubt, Bridesmaids features great performances from Kristen Wiig and company but McCarthy is the cherry on top playing the quirky, unfiltered sister of the groom. For this role, McCarthy received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2012.
