‘GhostBusters: Afterlife’ A frightful, Nostalgic Ride

The Rundown

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the sequel to the beloved supernatural comedy flicks of the 80s: Ghostbusters and Ghostbuster 2 that had a cult-like fan base. Fans of the franchise will be delighted to learn that Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters co-creator and director Ivan Reitman.

Set in contemporary times, 32 years after events of the last film, this new installment follows single mum Callie and her 2 kids teenage son Trevor (Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard) and pre-teen daughter Phoebe (The Haunting of Hill House’s Mckenna Grace) as they are evicted from their home and move to a farmhouse left behind by Callie’s estranged dad who we later find out is Egon from the original Ghostbusters.

Phoebe, Trevor and their new friends go on a fact-finding mission to find out who grandpa was and what secrets he left behind. Along the way, they encounter many familiar characters from the earlier films.

The Review

Afterlife starts out real slow and it was excruciating to wait and see when the real action starts but it sorta redeems itself when the Easter eggs start to show up like the proton-pack used to trap ghosts and the Ecto-1 car. It’s a ride down memory lane as the new generation of Ghostbusters hunt down spirits from the past who’ve escaped the proton-pack. They have wit and smarts and it makes for great on-screen banter between them.

The CGI has improved tremendously since 1984 and the ghosts now look a little more scary but nothing even kids can’t handle.

It was great to see the old cast make cameo appearances in this movie including the late Harold Ramis’ character Egon Splender who appears posthumously thanks to CGI.

Overall, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is an Ok-ish movie. I’m not really looking forward to another sequel. They should let it rest.  If you love seeing kids solve mysteries à la Scooby Doo and Stranger things, you’ll enjoy this movie.

Also, this was a nostalgic ride down memory lane that veteran fans of the franchise will appreciate.
