If you're one to get the jeepers-creepers quickly, this short Kenyan film brings it even closer home. Torture is a new 10-minute film directed by Peter Kawa which gives a chilling take on Christianity and salvation.
The movie synopsis which starts by reading, "It's dark. Screams!! Bodies hanging. They are all hung up, as though ready for slaughter…", tells you that this is not your usual thriller. When I read this, I was not expecting to be as spooked as I was when I watched it. This goes to show they achieved their goal to convince me of a different reality. However, the viewer will get the chance to interpret this one in so many ways.
Torture stars Gerald Langiri, Wanjiku Mburu, George Mo and Blessing Lung'aho. You will love that the background of darkness, the sound, the screams all go with the theme. Gerald is also convincing as a 'tormentor' of souls. When Blessing Lung'aho comes in as a 'saviour', we get to understand that the people who are being tortured are not the only ones as we hear more pangs of pain echoed out there. Our 'saviour' also doesn't explain who he is which leaves us with the choice of interpreting what his name and role is. Though the dialogue is short, you will understand the sadism behind the 'tormentor's' logic of tying people up.
Short films are currently enjoying a great moment. Rocque Pictures' Intellectual Scum and Watu Wote both received wide acclaim recently, with the latter bagging an Academy Award nom. Perhaps, instead of focusing on big-budget movies, this could be the way forward for our film industry.
I recommend you take some time off of your favourite cat videos and watch Torture next time you're on YouTube.
